Abstract:
The choice of subjects for high school students is of great significance to the national talent selection. Using a longitudinal survey from a high school, we examine the impact of peers’ gender attitudes on students’ choices between arts and sciences. The study found that when classmates are more inclined to agree with the statement “male students are more suitable for science than female students”, it significantly reduces the likelihood of female students choosing science. The gender role attitudes held by the male group have a greater impact on the subject choices of both male and female students. Further analysis shows that peers’ gender attitudes encourage male students with better history grades to choose physics, leading to greater negative emotions later. Finally, parents’ education levels and female headmasters can effectively mitigate the impact of gender bias on female students’ subject choices, but these moderating variables do not have a significant effect on male students’ subject choices.
